I have written before about the historical background of the Shia-Sunni conflict, and in particular about its manifestations in Pakistan. Since then, unfortunately but predictably, the phenomenon of Shia-killing in Pakistan has moved a little closer to my personal circle. First it was the universally loved Dr Ali Haider, famous retina surgeon, son of the great Professor Zafar Haider and Professor Tahira Bokhari, killed in broad daylight in Lahore along with his young son.

Way back in 2012, Salman Rushdie had called it a "piece of garbage", President Obama had appealed for its removal, his administration initially blaming it for the deadly September 2012 protests at the American embassy in Benghazi, Libya that resulted in the killing of the US Ambassador to Libya, but YouTube had refused to take off the Innocence of Muslims, a purported documentary on Prophet Mohammed's life, citing USA's freespeech provisions.

While Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti continues to be rightly taken to task for his racist and misogynst remarks against women from Africa, his party colleague, and AAP Executive Member Kumar Vishwas is facing the flak for his remarks made in a kavi sammelan in 2008.

Union minister Jairam Ramesh today says: "I didn't say Rahul Gandhi should apologise," adding that news channels "twisted my comments".

This comes after the Congress officially distanced itself from the minister's reported remarks yesterday, with the party spokesperson Meem Afzal saying that Gandhi has already clarified his statement in reply to the Election Commission (EC) and the party has also spoken about the issue:
