Someone on twitter suggested collecting stories of where you were when you heard the news of Bhutto's execution. I hope others will post their stories below, I have a couple. And some random comments:

I was at home because our board exams had been postponed in anticipation of the hanging. I woke up to see Ami (my mother) crying.

She just said, "They have hanged Bhutto".

I have written before about the historical background of the Shia-Sunni conflict, and in particular about its manifestations in Pakistan. Since then, unfortunately but predictably, the phenomenon of Shia-killing in Pakistan has moved a little closer to my personal circle. First it was the universally loved Dr Ali Haider, famous retina surgeon, son of the great Professor Zafar Haider and Professor Tahira Bokhari, killed in broad daylight in Lahore along with his young son.

Everyone and his dog is predicting an operation against the Pakistani Taliban by the Pakistan army. The word is that the TTP (or factions of the TTP, confusion about that being a standard part of Pakistani discourse and probably of the situation on the ground) has crossed all limits, attacking even in Punjab and killing soldiers, not just bloody civilians.

What the Dawn Published as: Malala bungee jumping hours after she was allegedly ‘shot.

Yesterday, Pakistani columnist Nadeem Farooq Paracha wrote a satirical column about the Malala conspiracy theories in Pakistan. It was so over the top that many people objected that it was not really funny as it should have been more subtle and deadpan.

Well, they understimated the power of America-hatred.

People on social media wrote tweets about this “revelation” published in Dawn News. OK, that’s just social media. There is no shortage of morons in the world, etc etc. But then Iran’s somewhat sophisticated propaganda site PRESS TV took the bait, with hilarious results.

The original link now takes you to some generic Press TV page. The Iranians were stupid, but not THAT stupid. They took it down. Luckily, we have a screenshot.

On June 23rd some 15-20 men dressed in the uniforms of the Gilgit Scouts climbed up to the base camp at the foot of the Diamir face of Nanga Parbat. There, at the height of 13000 feet above sea level, they pulled climbers, guides, porters and cooks out of their tents, smashed their phones, laptops and solar panels and put them in two groups. The locals were in one group, the foreigners were lined up on the other side. Then they shot all the foreign climbers in the back of the head. Since exit wounds are bigger than entry wounds and exit wounds were in the face, some of the foreigners are said to be hard to recognize. Looking at ID cards, they also shot a local cook whose name was Ali Hassan. Another local who told this story to a friend survived because his name is Sher Khan. He is Ismaili. Luckily for him, they just looked at ID cards. He survived because his name doesn't sound Shia.
